RE: Canon Pixma MP800 printer.
I refill my cartridges. I get constant error messages about low, incorrect or duplicate cartridges.
How can I turn off these messages and just enjoy saving money on ink in this otherwise excellent printer?

When using Uni-Kit compatible cartridges for Canon CLI8 and requiring to place original chips onto the Uni-Kit cartridges, you will need to reset the printer to accept the old chips. See attachment for instructions on how to do this. Also, notice how Uni-Kit compatibles for Canon CLI8 come in 2 parts, see attachment. This way you only need ONE chip per cartridge, and you can just keep changing the plugins. This is unique with Uni-Kit models.

Thanks for responding. I broke down and bought a new Canon. However, now I'm trying to use the scanner part of the MP800 and get a "wrong print head" message. Can't bypass this. Suggestions?[/quote]

hi all,

here is the background with the canon cli8 and pgi5's:

1) canon OEM cartridges have chips, which send "low ink" signals to the printer when they run out.
2) enter the compatible cartridges, which were first manufactured and released WITHOUT chips, requiring the "transplant" of the OEM chips onto the compatible cartridges. With the OEM chip already spent (reading low ink or out of ink), the Canon printers would display error messages, but like with the Canon IP4000 there was a workaround solution to at least force the printer to work.
3) Enter Canon again, having gotten smarter with their printers, they decided to force some of the newer printers to not work at all if the chips were measuring "out of ink". These "newer" printers include some of the MP series Canon printers, and they essentially would not always respond to the workaround procedure (depending on the driver version your printer was running)
4) Enter compatible chips. Uni-Kit cartridges now come with Static Control compatible chips for Canon CLI8 and PGI5, which allow your printer to recognize the cartridge like brand new and overcomes this issue.
5) Enter the Canon CLI8 resetter by Uni-Kit. Now, for refillers, you can reset the original Canon chip and refill your cartridge.

This is a classic example of cat and mouse by the OEM manufacturer (Canon) and the aftermarket cartridge industry. We try to refill cartridges to save money and the environment, but the OEM's fight back with various tactics.

So, in summary, if you want to avoid "out of ink" messages or workaround procedures, I recommend you either:

1) Buy Uni-Kit compatible (or remanufactured) Canon CLI-8 and PGI-5 cartridges WITH chips (note, these chips are either compatible chips or reset OEM chips, doesnt matter to you or your printer), or
2) Refill your OEM cartridges and reset the OEM chips with the Canon Resetter.

Note: The Canon resetter used to be over $100, Uni-Kit has a version which resells for under $30.

So i have a Canon MP830. Is there a way to reset the printer to accept old chips? I see you mentioned there are instructions for how to do this, but i'm not seeing any attachments or links to these instructions.
