What causes the toner chip in the QMS 2450 to "burn out"? Is it when the toner runs out? Or does it count copies and then burn?

The reason I ask is that I wonder if I keep the cartriges full, will I then avoid having to replace the chips at $12 a piece?

Thanks!
Gary
